Bellator 106 Play-by-Play


MMAFrenzy’s coverage of Bellator 106 rolls along with our live coverage and scoring of tonight’s Spike TV main card. Bellator 106 Play-by-Play:


Akop Stepanyan vs. Mike Richman



Rd. 1- Herb Dean is our referee and a touch of gloves gets us started. Fighters taking their time early. Spinning elbow by Akop doesn’t land flush but it lands solid. Richman has a solid jab working but eats a hard right hand. Wheel kick by Akop is blocked. Nice hands combo by Akop. Nice lead hook by Richman. Akop is cut under his right hand now. Nice exchange by both men but Richman is pressing now. Nice counter left by Akop. Outside legkick by Richman. Wicked right hand hurts Richman and he takes some damage but he lands a big left hook and Dean dives in early as Richman lands another shot. Akop is immediately upset with the stoppage.

Fight Master Welterweight Final: Joe Riggs vs. Mike Bronzoulis



Rd. 1- Touch of gloves to start the fight. Riggs looks better than he has in years past physically. MB using legkicks early and they’re paying off. Swarm by MB but he doesn’t land much. Headkick by MB and he pressures but gets clipped by Riggs. Riggs looks to capitalize but MB recovers. Riggs catches a kick and while he loses the leg he still lands the trip takedown. MB is throwing hammerfists from his back. MB pushes him off but Riggs passes to his MB’s back. Riggs is digging for the choke but loses it and takes mount. Riggs into front headlock control and he passes to the back. Hard shots by Riggs as the round ends and while MB complains, referee John McCarthy correctly tells him the shots are legal. MMAFrenzy has it 10-9 Riggs.


Rd. 2- Riggs catches MB storming and he lands a solid trip into halfguard. MB stands but Riggs is controlling the clinch. Riggs gets an accidental headbutt and it opens up a cut above his eye. Riggs is controlling the clinch and he lands a shot off the break. Body kick by MB. MB storms and he lands a left but again ends up getting tripped to his back. Riggs has side control now and now he takes MB’s back. Riggs is landing short strikes to try and open up MB’s neck. MB stands but Riggs takes him back down. MB swims up and catches Riggs over the top and reverses. Riggs is using elbows and he looks for a triangle and armbar before the round ends. MMAFrenzy has it 10-9 Riggs (20-18).


Rd. 3- MB swarms again and still only lands one strike. Riggs swarms on his own and lands a nice knee before landing a strong power double into a slam. Riggs passes to side control with ease and now he has back control. Riggs is peppering with strikes as he again looks for the choke. Riggs is controlling well on the back as he looks to stretch out MB. Riggs has an arm under the chin but MB blocks the choke. More strikes from Riggs now. Riggs is digging for the choke but MB keeps fighting hands well. MB stands with Riggs on his back with a minute left. MB just does not have the skill to get Riggs his back. Just as I say that, Riggs slips and MB reverses at the 0:15 mark. Fighters stand after the warning bell sounds but Riggs will be the Fight Master champion. MMAFrenzy has it 10-9 Riggs for a 30-27 win.

Featherweight Title Fight: Pat Curran (c) vs. Daniel Straus



Rd. 1- Jason Herzog is our referee tonight. Touch of gloves early. Nice right hand by Curran. Straus attacks with a double and stays tenacious to get the takedown. Curran uses the cage to stand and fights out. Nice 1-2 by Straus. Curran stops a double. Legkick by Curran. Body kick and a left hand from Straus land nicely. Curran stops the advance with a solid counter. Accidental cupshot by Curran and we’re back on. Body kick by Straus answers a Curran combo. Knees in the clinch and then an elbow and uppercut by Curran before Straus breaks. Hard legkick by Curran. Straus lands a step-in 1-2 before changing levels and attacking with an ankle pick. Curran with some elbows to defend here. Curran fends off the takedown but Straus has a bodylock now. Hard elbows by Curran break the clinch. 1-2 to a kick by Curran. Good scrap at the end of the round. MMAFrenzy has it 10-9 Straus.


Rd. 2- Curran with a nice jab to start the round. Legkick by Curran and a combo stops a Staus takedown. Nasty combo to a flying knee by Curran lands very well. Curran stays controlled though. Nice left by Straus. Great Curran uppercut stops a clinch by Straus. Good right by Curran and he gets pushed down by Straus but he is back up. Curran’s striking is much more effective this round. Straus goes to the Thai clinch but gets tagged by shots on the inside before a combo to the body makes him let go. Body kick by Straus. Nice right by Curran is answered well by Curran. Combo by Straus is answered by a more vicious combo from Curran and the champ stuffs a takedown. Headkick by Curran is checked. Straus throws one of his own that’s checked. Straus tries to clinch and eats a wicked over-the-top elbow. Nice left by Curran and a sweet counter left by Straus. Good technical fight so far. MMAFrenzy has it 10-9 Curran (19-19)


Rd. 3- Touch of gloves. Body kick by Curran answers a Straus combo. Combo by Curran is finished with a legkick that drops Straus but he’s right back up. Flying knee to a headkick by Straus misses. Nice left by Straus and he transitions to a takedown. Curran is using the cage to defend and land short strikes. Body lock by Straus and he misses a trip. Curran isn’t panicking against the cage and keeps throwing strikes as Straus looks for the inside and outside trip to no avail. Straus tries a hiptoss but the cage helps Curran stop it and reverse position. Straus again tries the throw and as he stands he eats a huge illegal knee from Curran. Straus is hurting here as the fight is stopped for the doc to come in. Herzog takes a point from Curran for the knee. Fighters shake on the restart and Straus lands a takedown into side control. Straus with a few short shots but not signifigant and Curran recovers guard. Curran misses a triangle as the round ends. Point deduction is huge in this fight. MMAFrenzy has it 10-8 Straus (29-27).


Rd. 4-Nice combo by Curran to open the round. Straus is very aggressive and controls the clinch. Knees to the body by clinch. Doubleleg takedown by Straus and Curran stands with Straus on his back. Nice snatch and return by Straus and he has Curran’s back. Curran fights hands and he is back up as Straus knees his thighs. Curran tries to set up a guillotine but cannot get there. Surprise guillotine attack by Curran but Straus pops his head out with just over a minute left. Strikes by Straus sets up his own guillotine and Curran is bleeding badly from a scalp cut as the round ends. MMAFrenzy has it 10-9 Straus (39-36)


Rd. 5- Touch of gloves to start the round. Straus pressures early and lands a nice left and a push kick. Combo by Curran and he lands another. Jumping knees by Straus are blocked. Counter left by Straus hurts Curran and Curran battles back before Straus gets the clinch. Knees by Straus and he gives a thumbs up and a smile to his corner before Curran reverses position. Straus tries yet another hip toss but it isn’t there and Curran misses a trip of his own. Curran has not showed much urgency before a takedown and he misses an omaplata that all but seals his fate. MMAFrenzy has the round 10-9 Curran but the fight (48-46) Straus.

Light Heavyweight Interim Title Fight: King Mo Lawal vs. Emanuel Newton



Rd. 1- Herb Dean is tonight’s referee. Newton looking to kick early on with legkicks. Mo’s hands are very high compared to last time. Mo stalks him to the cage and shoots a tenacious double leg before getting the takedown. Mo has Newton’s back as Newton tries to fight hands and stand. Mo traps Newton’s wrist and he is using it to land solid lefts. Mo has Newton back down now. Mo is landing solid rights as Newton finally separates and starts to pressure. Newton with a low blow and we’re back after a quick break. Mo times Newton’s spinning backfist to land a driving double. Hard shots by Mo as Newton works back to the cage. Hard knee to the chest as Newton stands. Mo blocks a combo from Newton. Newton’s punches are being blocked by Mo’s boxing guard and Mo lands a nice jab as Newton rushes. Mo taunts Newton as the round ends and Newton rushes recklessly. MMAFrenzy has it 10-9 Lawal.


Rd. 2- Mo working his jab more. Headkick by Newton is blocked. Body kick by Newton lands. Nasty jabs and left hook by Mo stagger Newton briefly. Jab from Newton lands. Snatch single to the cage by Mo and he throws a big knee in the clinch. Mo drops to a single and uses a perfectly executed lift to get the takedown and he quickly has side control. Newton manages to scramble up and he lands a flush headkick. Mo shoots to survive and he does but Newton stuffs it. Mo seems to have shaken it off and he lands a a jab before evading a Newton wheelkick. Mo lands to the body but Newton lands another body shot of his own. Jab by Newton and he just misses a killer right. MMFrenzy has it 10-9 Newton (19-19).


Rd. 3- Newton rushes but Mo blocks it. Nice left for Mo and he goes to the body too. Legkick by Newton and he lands another one. Good overhand right by Newton. Mo with a nice jab and Newton telegraphs another spinning attack. Nice swarm by Mo as he lands some hard shots. Newton’s nose is busted up now. Jab by Mo as Newton misses another kick. Spinning backick to the thigh by Newton and Mo lands a shot to the body of his own. Jabs by Mo are starting to land and Newton lands a backkick to the body. Nice left hook by Mo counters a right from Newton. Mo stalks him to the cage and lands to the body before missing a takedown. Mo back in on a takedown as Newton grabs a weak guillotine. Mo bails on the shot and lands a solid strike. MMAFrenzy has it 10-9 Newton (29-28).


Rd. 4- Newton’s legkick is checked but he lands a body kick. Jab by Newton but he misses the wheel kick. Body kick by Newton. Nice 1-2 by Mo but he doesn’t follow up. Newton misses a huge combo. Newton is going more karate style now as his hands are down. Mo with a stiff jab. Mo ducks a spinning backfist but he slips off Newton and the same is true of the second takedown attempt. Mo finally gets the double leg but Newton fights wrists and stands. Mo ducks the spinning backfist but doesn’t do much with it. Jab by Mo but he misses the follow up. MMAFrenzy has it 10-9 Lawal in a close round (38-38).


Rd. 5- Wicked right hook by Mo catches Newton but Newton is still more active. Nice right by Newton lands but then Mo lands a big counter right. Newton is now bleeding below the right eye and nose. Jab by Newton. Mo ducks a wheel kick and uses it to take Newton’s back but he cannot get him down. Newton is being very active but is missing alot. Mo lands a big right on a swarm. Big counter swarm and he lands some shots. Newton with a combo of his own. Hard exchange that Mo wins. Body shot by Mo is answered by a side kick to the thigh. Mo with the takedown with just over 0:30 left. Newton works back up and tries a takedown of his own. MMAFrenzy has it 10-9 Lawal (48-47) but it can go either way.
