Mamphela Ramphele Launches Political Party Platform: Agang South Africa

Conversations with My Sons and DaughtersAlert! Mamphela Ramphele, author of Conversations with My Sons and Daughters, announced the formation of a new political party platform, Agang South Africa, this morning. Agang means ?build? in SeSotho and the platform aims to ?contest the 2014 national elections?.

Ramphele said that Agang will ?declare war on corruption? and invited others to join her in building ?the country of our dreams?. She also addressed her late entry to politics: ?The decision to enter party politics has not come easily? I however feel called to lead the efforts of many South Africans who increasingly fear that we are missing too many opportunities to become that which we have the potential to become a great society.?

Agang South Africa has outlined its intentions with a five point manifesto of what it stands for:

  • Empower the people to govern
  • Build an Effective Public Service
  • Build a Restructured Economy
  • Build a 21st Century Education and Training System
  • Restore our Standing in Africa and the World

Mamphela made her announcement on Monday at a press breifing at Constitution Hill, ending weeks of speculation around her political plans.

Agang, which means ?build? in SeSotho, will be a platform that declares war against corruption.

Johannesburg ? Activist Mamphela Ramphele on Monday officially launched a new political party platform at a news conference in Johannesburg, promising to ?build the country of our dreams?.

The new party will be called Agang which is Sesotho for ?build?.
