BlackBerry launch sets Internet abuzz | Metro

TORONTO ? If a product?s value was measured in online buzz, the latest incarnation of the BlackBerry would be priceless.

The Internet was all of a twitter on Wednesday as the company once known as Research In Motion unveiled its newest products, its new corporate identity and its latest high-profile addition to the executive team.

Chatter about the newly rebranded BlackBerry, as well as the latest incarnations of its now-eponymous smartphone, dominated social media.

Statistics provided by the salesforce.com Marketing Cloud suggest there were more than 111,000 online mentions of the BlackBerry 10 by mid-afternoon, mere hours after chief executive Thorsten Heins wrapped up his presentation on the company?s latest efforts to reclaim dominance in the crowded smartphone market.

Social media chatter between 1a.m. and 1 p.m. ET was 70 per cent positive, the surveying company added.

Posts poured in from around the world, with the bulk of the traffic coming from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Venezuela and India.

More than 93 per cent of the conversation unfolded on Twitter, where BlackBerry-related hashtags and references were trending throughout Canada for much of the day.

The chatter mostly centred on the BlackBerry 10, the smartphone on which the Waterloo, Ont.-based company has pinned its hopes for a comeback.

The new phone drew a variety of reactions. Several users took to the web to share their excitement over the pending launch and praise BlackBerry for issuing an attractive new product.

?I?m sick of waiting, the more info I get, the more I can?t wait,? one user tweeted.

?I?m having an iPhone mid-life crisis. I?m impressed by the BB10,? wrote another.

Others, however, voiced skepticism that the new phone ? which will be available in both a touch screen and keyboard model ? will be enough to revive the company?s flagging fortunes.

?Can?t believe the saints on Twitter are using words such as ?stoked? to describe excitement over #BB10 when God has given us iOS & Android,? read one tweet.

?#BB10 is the new Star Wars movie. We want it to be good, but it won?t be,? wrote another user.

Jokes at BlackBerry?s expense flew faster after its shares tumbled to close down almost 12 per cent in Toronto by the end of launch day.

The company also came in for a certain amount of online derision for appointing R&B diva Alicia Keys as its new global creative director.

Heins touted Keys? ?vast network of relationships in the entertainment, social media and business communities? during his glitzy presentation, but the pitch wasn?t enough to convince the online peanut gallery.

?If Justin Timberlake can?t save Myspace, then I?m pretty sure Alicia Keys can?t save BB10. I?m so confused by that choice,? wrote one Twitter user.

Others felt the company should have looked closer to home for a celebrity spokesperson.

?Carly Rae Jepsen would?ve been a better Global Creative Director for BB. She?s Canadian and #BB10 can ?call you maybe?.?

Reaction on other social media platforms was much more muted, according to salesforce.com?s figures.

Facebook users, who accounted for only two per cent of the global online buzz, were slow to weigh in on the launch. A fan page for the new device had garnered fewer than 150 supporters by late afternoon Wednesday.

Online buzz may be a sign of interest, but the true impact of the new products, professional brand and personnel at BlackBerry remains to be seen. The touchscreen version of the new phones will be available in Canada next week, and as one Twitter user noted, their sales figures will have the final word.

?Everybody will tweet about #BB10, lets see how many of you actually buy it.?

One dead as vicious storms roll across South

ADAIRSVILLE, Ga. (AP) ? Powerful winds, rain and hail battered parts of the South on Wednesday, killing at least one person as the large storm system damaged homes, overturned cars on an interstate and knocked out electricity to thousands.

At least one tornado was confirmed and several more suspected, and conditions remained ripe for more. Since Tuesday, the system had caused damage across a swath from Missouri to Georgia.

In recent days, people in the South and Midwest had enjoyed unseasonably balmy temperatures in the 60s and 70s. A system pulling warm weather from the Gulf of Mexico was colliding with a cold front moving in from the west, creating volatility.

Police said high winds toppled a tree onto a shed in Nashville, Tenn., where a man had taken shelter, killing him. As the storm crept eastward, officials reported a possible tornado in Adairsville, Ga., about 60 miles northwest of Atlanta. At least 10 cars were overturned on Interstate 75, and emergency crews were trying to get to people reported trapped in homes and buildings, said Bartow County Fire Chief Crag Millsap.

Across the region, downed power lines, trees and tree limbs were making it difficult to reach people who needed help.

Another person was reported injured by lightning in Arkansas during the storm's eastward trek. Two people suffered minor injuries when a mobile home was blown off its foundation in Kentucky.

The National Weather Service's Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Okla., said it was investigating reports of at least four possible tornadoes in states including Arkansas and Mississippi. In Tennessee, officials confirmed that a tornado with peak wind speeds of 115 mph touched down in Mount Juliet. No serious injuries were reported there, though the path of damage was about 150 yards wide, including homes, a warehouse and an automotive business.

Hail ranging up to nearly golf-ball size was also reported in some areas, the center said.

Thousands were reported without power in Tennessee, where tornado warnings and flash flood warnings were issued for several counties and a tractor-trailer was blown over by high winds.

The nation has had its longest break between tornado fatalities since detailed tornado records began being kept in 1950, according to the Storm Prediction Center and National Climatic Data Center. The last one was June 24, when a person was killed in a home in Highlands County, Fla. That was 220 days ago as of Tuesday.

The last day with multiple fatalities was June 4, when three people were killed in a mobile home in Scott County, Mo.

FDA warns company over unapproved flu remedy

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Federal regulators say a Florida company has been marketing an untested inhaled formula as a flu remedy in violation of drug safety regulations.

The Food and Drug Administration and the Federal Trade Commission issued a warning letter to Flu and Cold Defense LLC for making misleading, unproven claims about its GermBullet inhaler.

The warning comes amid a worse-than-usual flu season that has hit the elderly particularly hard. So far, half of confirmed flu cases are in people 65 and older.

FDA regulators say they are seeing an uptick in bogus flu remedies, including fake flu vaccines, counterfeit antiviral drugs and air filters that allegedly remove the flu from the air.

"When there is a particular health issue in the news fraudulent products spike," said Howard Sklamberg, FDA's director of compliance. "So right now fraud products to prevent or treat the flu are big with scammers."

The Boca Raton, Fla.-based Flu and Cold Defense advertises the product as a "proprietary blend of 11 organic botanicals." The company's website claims that "an FDA recognized virology lab" tested the formula and "confirmed that it has the potential capability to kill cold and flu viruses."

But FDA regulators say the mixture has never been reviewed as safe and effective and the company is violating drug safety regulations.

All new drugs marketed in the U.S. must be submitted for approval to the FDA before they can be sold to consumers. Sklamberg says consumers should remember that "there aren't any legally marketed over-the-counter products to prevent or treat the flu."

The GermBullet is sold online through retailers like CVS.com and at a handful of small pharmacies and natural food stores in Florida.

A man reached by phone at Flu and Cold Defense's office could not immediately comment on the warning letter.

This year's flu season started about a month earlier than normal and the dominant flu strain is one that tends to make people sicker. The government doesn't keep a running tally of adult deaths from the flu, but estimates that it kills about 24,000 people most years. Vaccinations are recommended for anyone 6 months or older.

Flu and Cold Defense issued a news release early in the month saying GermBullet "may help protect you so your immune system is not overwhelmed as the flu reaches epidemic levels." FDA and FTC regulators take issue with that statement and a number of others from the company's website, including that the inhaler is "shown to reduce illness-causing bacteria, cold and flu viruses and fungi."

The letter, dated Jan. 24, was posted to the FDA's website Tuesday.

Regulators gave the company 15 business days to correct the problematic statements.

"The FTC strongly urges you to review all claims for your products and ensure that those claims are supported by competent and reliable scientific evidence," states the letter.

The FDA regularly issues warning letters to companies that do not follow regulations for manufacturing and promoting drugs and medical devices. The letters are not legally binding, but the FDA can take companies to court if they are ignored.

Tornado watch in effect for central Indiana overnight

A line of severe storms is making its way through Indiana early Wednesday morning, triggering weather watches and warnings across the state.

At?4:15 a.m., Duke Energy was reporting about 8,400 (down from more than 18,000) customers without power.?More than 2,400 customers were reported without power in Lawrence County, and 2,300 in Johnson.

At the same time, IPL was reporting about 1,700 customers (down from 3,100) without electricity, including nearly 1,300 in the northeast part of Marion County.

A power line was reported down in the 6200 block of E. 86th Street and a tree fell onto a house was reported in a neighborhood near 75th Street and Dean Road.? Several other trees were down in that area.

Winds reaching 70 mph were reported in Brownsburg ahead of the storms. A spotter in Bloomington reported a 64 mph wind gust.

Tornado Watch issued

A tornado watch has been issued for?33?Indiana counties until early Wednesday morning.

BARTHOLOMEW...CLARK...CRAWFORD...DECATUR...DELAWARE...DUBOIS...FLOYD...HANCOCK...
HARRISON...HENRY...JACKSON...JEFFERSON...JENNINGS...ORANGE...PERRY...RANDOLPH...RUSH...
SCOTT...SHELBY...SPENCER...WASHINGTON

The watch remains in effect until 5 a.m.

See all watches and warnings here.

Forecast

Central Indiana is under a slight risk for severe storms overnight, with the most likely timing for storms between midnight and 6:00 am. Damaging winds are most likely, but isolated tornadoes and hail can't be ruled out. Southwest Indiana including Evansville is under a moderate severe risk.

In addition to the severe threat, there's also a flood threat. One to two inches of rain could cause some street flooding and rising rivers are likely. Since our ground is already saturated, flooding in the usual spots is possible. A flood watch runs from 7:00 pm to 11:00 am.

Temperatures top out in the low to mid-60s Tuesday (the record is 66 set in 2002) with the warmth lasting into the early hours of the morning along with the storms. Behind the storms and cold front, temperatures will drop much of the day Wednesday.

Wednesday morning's temperature around 8:00 am will probably be around 59. We'll fall into the 30s by late afternoon. There could be some passing rain showers that turn to snow showers as the colder air works in. That leads to a bitterly cold end to the week. Some light snow is possible Saturday, then we warm up again.

Some tips for tonight: clear out your storm drains today before the heavy rain arrives, and before you go to bed, make sure your weather radio is on to alert you if any warnings are issued while you're asleep. You can also sign up for the Personal Forecast ?to get alerts delivered straight to your smart phone or email.

Strong winds and tornadoes are also possible from Texas to Alabama and as far north as Michigan. The temperature in the central Missouri college town of Columbia reached 77 degrees on Monday, a record high for January. The spring-like conditions came after a spell of freezing rain, and forecasts predict early-morning snow on Wednesday.

The National Weather Service's Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Okla., says the risks of tornadoes touching down Tuesday is greatest in northeast Texas, northern Louisiana, northwest Mississippi, southeast Missouri and much of Arkansas. That system is expected to hit much of the eastern United States on Wednesday.

Gas leaks proves fatal at Samsung chip plant in Korea

A maintenance contractor called out to fix a hydrofluoric acid leak at a Samsung plant has died after being taken to hospital, according to Korean media. Four others were injured by the lethal gas but have reportedly been discharged by doctors. The factory in question is located within South Korea, which isn't known for the sort of lax safety standards that plague workers in China, but AsiaE reports the accident will nevertheless be investigated to find out if any laws were breached in the way the leak was handled, and if the killed contractor was wearing the right protective gear. For the sake of context, it's worth remembering that even state-of-the-art installations can be prone to accidents -- in 2011, for example, seven American workers were injured in an explosion at Intel's semiconductor fab in Arizona.

Sometimes a nickel is worth millions

1 hr.

A humble 5-cent coin with a storied past is headed to auction and bidding is expected to top $2 million a century after it was mysteriously minted.?

The 1913 Liberty Head nickel is one of only five known to exist, but it's the coin's back story that adds to its cachet: It was surreptitiously and illegally cast, discovered in a car wreck that killed its owner, declared a fake, forgotten in a closet for decades and then found to be the real deal.?It all adds up to an expected sale of $2.5 million or more when it goes on the auction block April 25 in suburban Chicago.?

"Basically a coin with a story and a rarity will trump everything else," said Douglas Mudd, curator of the American Numismatic Association Money Museum in Colorado Springs, Colo., which has held the coin for most of the past 10 years. He expects it could fetch more than Heritage Auction's estimate, perhaps $4 million and even up to $5 million.?

"A lot of this is ego," he said of collectors who could bid for it. "I have one of these and nobody else does."?

The sellers who will split the money equally are four Virginia siblings who never let the coin slip from their hands, even when it was deemed a fake.?

The nickel made its debut in a most unusual way. It was struck at the Philadelphia mint in late 1912, the final year of its issue, but with the year 1913 cast on its face ? the same year the beloved Buffalo Head nickel was introduced.?

Mudd said a mint worker named Samuel W. Brown is suspected of producing the coin and altering the die to add the bogus date.?

The coins' existence weren't known until Brown offered them for sale at the American Numismatic Association Convention in Chicago in 1920, beyond the statute of limitations. The five remained together under various owners until the set was broken up in 1942.?

A North Carolina collector, George O. Walton, purchased one of the coins in the mid-1940s for a reported $3,750. The coin was with him when he was killed in a car crash on March 9, 1962, and it was found among hundreds of coins scattered at the crash site.?

One of Walton's heirs, his sister Melva Givens of Salem, Va., was given the 1913 Liberty nickel after experts declared the coin a fake because of suspicions the date had been altered. The flaw probably happened because of Brown's imprecise work casting the planchet ? the copper and nickel blank disc used to create the coin.?

"For whatever reason, she ended up with the coin," her daughter, Cheryl Myers, said.?

Melva Givens put the coin in an envelope and stuck it in a closet, where it stayed for the next 30 years until her death in 1992.?

The coin caught the curiosity of Cheryl Myers' brother, Ryan, the executor of his mother's estate. "He'd take it out and look at it for long periods of time," she said.?

Ryan Myers said a family attorney had heard of the famous 1913 Liberty nickels and asked if he could see the Walton. "He looked at it and he told me he'd give me $5,000 for it right there," he said, declining an offer he could not accept without his siblings' approval.?

Finally, they brought the coin to the 2003 American Numismatic Association World's Fair of Money in Baltimore, where the four surviving 1913 Liberty nickels were being exhibited. A team of rare coin experts concluded it was the long-missing fifth coin. Each shared a small imperfection under the date.?

"The sad part is my mother had it for 30 years and she didn't know it," Cheryl Myers said. "Knowing our mother, she probably would have invested it for us. She always put her children first."?

Since its authentication, the Walton nickel has been on loan to the Colorado Springs museum and has been publicly exhibited nationwide.?

The coin will be up for grabs at a rare coin and currency auction.?

Todd Imhof, executive vice president of Heritage, said the nickel is likely to attract lofty bids that only a handful of coins have achieved at auction. A 1933 double eagle, a $20 gold coin, holds the U.S. record: $8 million.?

Imhof expects the Walton nickel to generate some buzz.?

"This is a trophy item that sort of transcends the hobby," he said. "It's an interesting part of American history and there are collectors who look for something like this."?

Ryan Myers said he's not keen on selling the nickel.?

"First of all, it had been in the family for so long," he said. "It's not like something you found in a flea market or something you just found."?

Cheryl Myers said they're often asked why they held on to the coin for a decade after they learned it was authentic instead of immediately cashing it in.?

"It was righting a 40-year-old wrong," she wrote in an email. By allowing the American Numismatic Museum to display it for the past decade, it was honoring Walton's wishes.?

"It has been quite a ride," she said.?

95% Chasing Ice

All Critics (64) | Top Critics (21) | Fresh (59) | Rotten (3)

Global Warming? "Seeing is believing."

The most important documentary of the year.

"Chasing Ice" is a grand adventure, a visual amazement and a powerful warning.

If you're looking for eye-popping evidence that the world's glaciers are melting, don't miss the small-scale but spectacular documentary, Chasing Ice.

The rapid disappearance of ice mountains, filmed over a period of years, is compressed through time-lapse technology into minutes and seconds. The speeded-up effect is harrowing and also, disturbingly, eerily beautiful.

The movie might have given us a bit less of Balog and a bit more of the startling sequences he produced.

Chasing Ice will open your eyes to a world you've never seen before and it will make you think. But whether any of us can change anything is a different matter altogether.

While skeptics continue to doubt global warming is a man-made phenomenon - Rush Limbaugh called warnings about it "garbage science" - "Chasing Ice" leaves little doubt it is occurring.

It's an absorbing and vital watch.

It's like watching our world disappear.

A few scientists pop their heads in here, a few charts are deployed, but Chasing Ice is powered primarily by the imagery, stark, irrefutable evidence that the planet is warming, not in one or two isolated places but everywhere.

"Chasing Ice" is a beautiful film to watch, especially on the big screen. But the documentary's visual pleasures come with a heavy dose of guilt.

It's sobering stuff but the film's impact is somewhat diminished by Orlowski's reverential profile of Balog, who continues to crusade despite the toll his endeavours have taken on his body.

The documentary feels a little slight but the images speak for themselves ...

Is this about the hazards of global warming or the awesomeness of James Balog? Not entirely sure...

If any film can convert the climate-change sceptics, Chasing Ice would be it: here, seeing really is believing.

While more detailed scientific analysis and greater discussion of impacts would have been welcome, the film's visual rhetoric is solid.

National Geographic photographer James Balog illustrates climate change with time-lapsed records of glacial retreat.

A project of heroic, Herzogian endeavour. Mad, you might say. But probably not as mad as what the rest of us are doing about climate change: namely almost nothing.

NIH should retire most chimpanzees from medical research, panel says (+video)

Hundreds of chimpanzees at NIH facilities should no longer be used as test subjects, the panel said, but 50 should be kept as a contingency, adding that all the chimps should be housed more comfortably.

By Pete Spotts,?Staff writer / January 23, 2013

Ron, featured in the film 'Chimpanzees: An Unnatural History', was born in a research lab and spent most of his life in isolation. Subsequently, he went to live at the Save the Chimps sanctuary in Ft. Pierce, Florida.

A senior scientific advisory panel at the National Institutes of Health, in a step toward phasing out the use of chimpanzees in federally funded medical research,?has found "no compelling evidence" to support keeping hundreds of chimpanzees at NIH facilities and recommends that all but about 50 chimps be retired.

This small group would remain available as a contingency should some unforeseen disease emerge for which chimps would be the best stand-ins for humans. But they, along with the retirees, would be housed in facilities designed to more adequately accommodate the full range of normal chimp physical and social activities ? from climbing, foraging, and daily nest-building to hanging out in sizable groups on branches high off the ground, according to the panel.

The panel also recommends ending 16 of 30 research projects involving chimpanzees that the NIH currently is funding. The largest proportional hit falls on biomedical research, one of three categories of projects. Six out of nine current biomedical projects would end.

The ultimate driver behind the recommendations: concerns about the value and ethics of using chimpanzees, biologically the nearest relative to humans, for physically painful and intrusive infectious-disease research.

If the 28 recommendations are implemented, the effort would represent "an historic step forward" in moving chimps out of the lab and into sanctuaries, says Kathleen Conlee, vice-president for animal-research issues at the Humane Society of the United States, based in Washington.

Even foes of federal legislation to greatly restrict the use of chimps and other "great apes" in biomedical research see merit in the new recommendations.

As a stand-in for humans, "the chimpanzee has played a very important role in the evolution of biomedical research," notes Frankie Trull, president of the National Association for Biomedical Research (NABR) in Washington, which fought against the Great Apes Protection and Cost Reduction Act of 2011, which died in December with the end of the 113th Congress.

But biomedical science has advanced, Ms. Trull continues. And keeping chimpanzees is expensive; chimps are not euthanized but must be cared for until they die naturally. Researchers have found alternative animal models for some of the kinds of studies that once centered on chimps.

Although NABR opposed the Great Ape Protection and Cost Reduction Act, the group is comfortable with the recommendations the NIH is now considering, Trull says.

The case for change and the steps to take came from the scientific community, she observes, adding, "scientists should determine what animal models should be used, not Congress."

Chimpanzees represent a tiny proportion of animals used in biomedical research. The overwhelming majority of animals used are either rodents or zebra fish.

The recommendations represent the outcome of a process that began at the end of 2010, when three US senators asked the US National Academies to examine the issue, as did the NIH. A year later, the National Academies' Institute of Medicine released its report.

The 86-page report released for comment on Jan. 22 was pulled together by a senior working group that the NIH gathered to turn the Institute of Medicine's report into specific recommendations.

If adopted, the recommendations would apply only to NIH-owned chimps and those used in the course of NIH-funded research. Of 670 chimps the NIH owns or supports, 219 have been retired. Some 282 are research-ready. Another 169 have been labeled "research inactive," a kind of bridge category between the first two.

By some estimates, another 350 chimps would fall outside the purview of these recommendations because they are owned either by private pharmaceutical companies or by universities.

Indeed, the Human Society's Ms. Conlee suggests the Great Ape Protection Act is likely to be reintroduced this year to broaden restrictions to chimps not covered by the new recommendations.

Website design & development for small business India USA Canada

Most of the urban people of today are mobile Internet users. Whenever a new smart phone hits the market, it sells like a hotcake. Apart from smart phones, regular mobile sets give Internet access and integrate social networking. Youngsters are using tabs to go trendy. Tabs come with Internet connectivity, too. So, Internet access is not a big deal in present times, ruled by digital technology. With the increasing sale of mobile phones and tabs, the number of Internet users is evidently on the rise.? You are perhaps wondering what the purpose of this talk is. Am I right?

Do you ever think that you can sell your product or service to this mobile Internet using population, through a small business website? Yes, this is what I am looking to make you understand. You have a small business, and therefore you don?t find the idea of having a website a feasible one. As far as I think, you are not aware of how a website can make a difference in the performance of your business. If your business is located in a Tier 1 or Tier 2 or Tier 3 city, you can take the advantage of your urban business presence through a website. How? To know, go through the rest.

Like print newspaper classifieds, there are classifieds on the Internet. To say precisely, these are dedicated classified websites where businesses, small and big, are advertised with along with their physical addresses and contact details. The sole purpose is to fetch potential customers to their stores. However, this policy does not benefit big businesses and small businesses equally. The main point of difference between big businesses and small ones is a website, in this respect.

Large-scale businesses have their own websites. Their business website address is mentioned in online classified ads of a specific category. They receive a good volume of traffic from the daily visitors to online classified portals via their website links. Thus they are quick enough to trap the traffic for the selling of their products or services. And, you are losing them out to your rivals just because of having no website. Who is benefitted ? they or you?

Being small or big in business does not matter. What matters most is the target market exposure that a website provides. If you have a small business website and if you mention the website address in online classified ads, the viewers of your classified advertisement will surely click on the website link and explore what you are offering, what the latest product is, and what the market price is. Today?s Internet savvy shoppers prefer to view a product online before visiting the store where is the product is available.

Having a website for your small business is a sort of online marketing trick. If you don?t try this trick, others will do and benefit from it. Leaving the market open to your rivals is not a good business policy. Most of small business owners hesitate to have a website. It is mainly because they are worried of web design costs. High web design cost for small businesses is simply a misconception. Small business website design services are quite affordable at some web design companies.

Hope, you have got the purpose of this entire discussion. You too can gain a share of the online market. But you need to have a website for your small business for that.

Uganda again arrests leading opposition politician Besigye

KAMPALA (Reuters) - Leading opposition politician Kizza Besigye was arrested for planning anti-government riots in the Ugandan capital Kampala, police said on Saturday.

Besigye has led protests for years aimed at toppling President Yoweri Museveni, to whom he lost a presidential election in February 2011. He denounced that poll as fraudulent.

His supporters were at the forefront of widespread anti-government protests against the high cost of living in 2011 and, after a lull last year, they led demonstrations again in October and Besigye was arrested.

Besigye has lost three elections against Museveni, who has been in power for more than 26 years, and stepped down as leader of Uganda's biggest opposition party, Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) last year, but is still a popular politician.

Earlier this week police banned opposition leaders from clearing up rubbish in Kampala's suburbs, saying it was a cover for staging public protests.

"Following attempts to unlawfully assemble and carry out riotous demonstrations ... Dr. Kizza Besigye has been arrested this morning," police said in a statement.

The opposition holds a range of grievances against Museveni, accusing him of seeking to be president for life as well as failing to tackle corruption and rights abuses.

Major western donors withheld aid to the east African country of 33 million people last month citing graft claims in the prime minister's office.

FDC secretary general, Alice Alaso, told Reuters Besigye had been arrested outside his home as he drove out.

Alaso said she visited Besigye at Kira police station, about 13 km (8 miles) from the city center, where he was being held.

Police stopped her giving him a bottle of water, she said.

"Their aim is to starve him ... how can you arrest someone when he has committed no crime?" she said.

Police did not say what charges they would bring against Besigye, who went for medical treatment in Kenya in 2011 after he was nearly blinded with chemical spray by police breaking up demonstrations.

NASA's Aqua satellite identified powerful thunderstorms around the center of Cyclone Garry as the storm continued to intensify over warm waters of the South Pacific Ocean. Garry has prompted warnings for the southern group of the Cook Islands.

When NASA's Aqua satellite passed over Cyclone Garry the AIRS instrument captured an infrared image of Garry's clouds, providing temperature data to forecasters at the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (whom forecast tropical cyclones in that region). AIRS, the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder instrument, showed that there was a large area of powerful thunderstorms where cloud tops were so high that they were as cold as -63 degrees Fahrenheit (-52 Celsius). Those thunderstorms were producing heavy rainfall over the open waters of the Southern Pacific Ocean.

Cyclone Garry appeared to be near its peak on Jan. 25 when the storm's maximum sustained winds reached 85 knots (97.8 mph/157.4 kph). At 0900 UTC (4 a.m. EST) Garry's center was located near 16.6 south latitude and 160.2 west longitude, about 515 nautical miles (592.7 miles/953.8 km) west of Bora Bora. Garry was moving to the southeast at 15 knots (17.2 mph/27.7 kph).

Warnings and Watches Posted

The Fiji Meteorological Service has issued storm warnings for the southern group of the Cook Islands that include: Rarotonga, Aitutaki, Mangaia, Atiu, Mauke, Mitiaro, Palmerston, Manuae and Takutea.

A storm warning is in effect for Aitutaki, Manuae, Takutea and Atiu. Sustained winds of 60 knots (69 mph/111.1 kph) with higher gusts can be expected as Garry approaches and passes. Garry is expected to generate high seas and heavy rainfall that could produce flooding in low-lying coastal areas. A gale warning is in effect for Mauke, Mitiaro, Mangaia and Rarotonga. Squally thunderstorms with heavy rainfall may cause flooding in low-lying areas. Garry is expected to bring sustained winds of 40 knots (46 mph/74 kph) with higher gusts and rough seas.

A strong wind warning is in effect for the rest of the southern Cooks. Strong southeast winds with average speeds of 25 to 30 knots (28.7 to 34.5 mph / 46.3 to 55.5 kph) are expected with squally thunderstorms and periods of heavy rainfall. Seas are expected to be rough, and some low-lying flooding is possible. For updates on warnings and watches from the Fiji Meteorological Service, visit: http://www.met.gov.fj/current_warnings.php

NASA's TRMM Satellite Measures Heavy Rainfall in Garry

NASA's Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) satellite saw tropical cyclone Garry moving through the open waters of the South Pacific Ocean on January 25, 2013 at 0909 UTC (4:09 a.m. EST). Tropical Cyclone Garry was classified as a category two tropical cyclone on the Saffir-Simpson hurricane scale a couple hours earlier but had started to weaken when TRMM flew over. Sustained wind speeds were estimated to be less than 85 knots (~98 mph) and Garry is forecast to continue weakening while moving toward the southeast.

TRMM's main mission is to measure rainfall over tropics but has frequently been useful for monitoring tropical cyclones. The rainfall data compiled on Tropical Cyclone Garry was from two TRMM instruments. Rain rates in the Garry's center were taken from the TRMM Precipitation Radar (PR), the first precipitation radar in space, while rain rates in the outer swath were taken from the TRMM Microwave Imager (TMI). The heaviest rainfall was occurring in Garry's eastern quadrant at a rate of 2 inches (50 mm) per hour.

TRMM's Microwave Imager (TMI) is a passive microwave sensor designed to estimate rainfall in an 878 km (~545.6 miles) wide area by measuring the amount of microwave energy emitted by the Earth and its atmosphere. TRMM PR has a horizontal resolution at the ground of about 5.0 km (~3.1 miles) and sees a strip of the earth that is 154 miles (247 kilometers) wide.

TRMM PR can peer through obscuring clouds and provides 3-D vertical profiles of rain and snow from the Earth's surface up to a height of about 12 miles (20 kilometers). The 3-D and rainfall imagery is created at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md.

Steering the Storm

The upper levels of the atmosphere are a major factor in the life and behavior of a tropical cyclone. Forecasters at the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) analyzed the upper levels of the atmosphere above Garry and found that the system is deeply embedded in the prevailing westerly winds. Those upper level winds are contributing to Garry's intensification.

By Jan. 27, a trough (elongated area) of low pressure is expected to approach Garry and change its direction to a more east-southeasterly direction.

As Garry moves further to the south, forecasters at JTWC expect vertical wind shear to increase and make the storm decay. Garry is expected to become an extra-tropical cyclone over the next couple of days and become a cold core low by Jan. 29.

The research group led by Associate Professor Kenji Osafune and his colleague Shin-ichi Mae, both from Center for iPS Cell Research and Application (CiRA), Kyoto University in Japan, has succeeded in developing a highly efficient method of inducing human induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells to differentiate into intermediate mesoderm, the precursor of kidney, gonad, and other cell lineages. This represents a major step toward realizing renal regeneration.

As nearly all kidney cells are derived through differentiation from intermediate mesoderm, to realize kidney regeneration requires first the development of an efficient technology for differentiating human iPS or embryonic stem (ES) cells into intermediate mesoderm.

The research team established a method through which fluorescent protein can be readily inserted into the human iPS/ES cell genome through homologous recombination and used it in human iPS cells to successfully introduce green fluorescent protein (GFP) into Odd-skipped related 1: (OSR1), a marker gene for intermediate mesoderm differentiation. This makes it possible to ascertain whether differentiation into the target intermediate mesoderm cells has been achieved.

The system was then used to establish a protocol for inducing iPS cell differentiation into intermediate mesoderm which produced a high success rate of 90% or more. It was confirmed that the resulting human intermediate mesoderm was able to differentiate into various types of kidney cell, and renal tubule structures were successfully generated.

The findings indicate the possibility of using iPS cells to create a supply of cells for use in renal regenerative medicine. The differentiation system developed by the researchers is also expected to provide a new research tool to help elucidate the developmental mechanism of intermediate mesoderm.

The next step required is to develop a technique that allows efficient and specific differentiation into kidney cells using intermediate mesoderm derived from human iPS/ES cells. As intermediate mesoderm is known to differentiate into the three different lineages of kidney, adrenal cortex, and gonad cells, the new technique has potential application in regenerative medicine not only for the kidney but also for the adrenal cortex and gonad.

(AP) ? Japan's benchmark stock index hit a 32-month high Friday as the yen continued to retreat against the dollar and investors cheered the new government's plans to boost the economy. Other stock markets edged up.

Evan Lucas of IG Markets in Melbourne said he expected to see further surges in Japan's Nikkei 225 index after Yasutoshi Nishimura, a senior vice minister of the Japanese government's Cabinet Office, commented that the yen would fall further. The Nikkei surged 2.9 percent to 10,926.65, its highest close since April 30, 2010.

European stocks were mixed. Britain's FTSE 100 fell 0.1 percent to 6,259.49, but Germany's DAX rose 0.2 percent to 7,762.35 and France's CAC-40 edged up less than 0.1 percent to 3,754.31.

Wall Street appeared headed for gains, with Dow Jones industrial futures 0.2 percent higher at 13,806 and S&P 500 futures gaining 0.2 percent to 1,494.20.

In Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 index surged 2.9 percent to

A weaker yen helps Japanese exporters by making products sold abroad less expensive and also helps some of the country's trading partners by increasing demand for the raw materials they ship to Japan, Lucas said.

The recent decline in the yen's value against the dollar and drops against other major currencies have been driven by expectations that Japan's central bank will try to engineer inflation by increasing the amount of money in circulation.

The bank has been under pressure from Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who took office a month ago, to do more to end Japan's prolonged spell of falling prices known as deflation. The ultimate aim is to create a recovery for Japan's moribund economy.

South Korea's Kospi fell amid fears that the country's exporters could be slammed by Japan's dropping yen, which makes Japanese products less expensive overseas. The benchmark fell 1 percent to 1,943.97.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng lost 0.1 percent to 23,580.43. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 rose 0.5 percent to 4,835.20.

In mainland China, the Shanghai Composite Index fell 0.5 percent to 2,291.30 and the smaller Shenzhen Composite Index lost 0.2 percent at 909.52.

Among individual stocks, Japan's Sony Corp. jumped 8.5 percent and Toshiba Corp. advanced 5.3 percent. Agriculture Bank of China, one of the four main state owned banks, lost 1.4 percent

South Korea's Samsung Electronics, which said the strong won will hurt its earnings this year, fell 2.5 percent. South Korean carmaker Hyundai Motor Co. shed 3.4 percent.

Benchmark oil for March delivery was up 25 cents to $96.20 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract gained 72 cents to finish at $95.95 a barrel on the Nymex on Thursday.

In currencies, the euro fell to $1.3425 from $1.3371 late Thursday in New York. The dollar rose to 90.63 yen from 89.96 yen.

Mass extinction? Man may still have time to catalog Earth's species.

A trio of respected biologists and zoologists concludes that Earth's sixth mass extinction may be unfolding slower than feared, giving time for the valuable work of cataloging the planet's species.

For years, ecologists and biologists have warned that the planet is sliding into a mass extinction event comparable to the one that did in the dinosaurs 65 million years ago.

But Earth?s species may not be vanishing as fast as previously believed ? providing a fresh opportunity to catalog and conserve more of them before global warming and habitat loss take a higher toll on the planet?s biodiversity.

That's the conclusion a trio of respected biologists and zoologists has reached after reviewing recent studies on extinction, the pace at which news species are being reported, estimates of undiscovered species, and the human and technological capital available for building the catalog.

When it comes to discovering and preserving biodiversity, "things aren't hopeless," says Mark Costello, a University of Auckland marine zoologist and the lead author of the analysis, which appeared in this week?s edition of Science.

Three years ago, another, larger team of biologists and zoologists estimated that if collectively countries devoted $500 million to $1 billion a year to the project of cataloging non-bacterial life on Earth, it could be complete within 50 years.

Dr. Costello and colleagues renew that call. And their lower estimate of the number of species and a higher estimate of the people available than many thought implies the job could be done more quickly.

The stakes are high, many researchers say. Human population growth and activities ? from altering landscapes and oceans to altering climate ? are widely seen as the drivers behind the current mass-extinction event, the planet?s sixth.

"We are the asteroid," says Michael Novacek, provost and curator at the American Museum of Natural History in New York, referring to the event widely held to have triggered the demise of the dinosaurs 65 million years ago.

"This may be the most important century in our evolutionary history, where the environment is really transformed to a level where the nature of life on Earth is redefined," says Dr. Novacek, who was not part of the team performing the new analysis.

Getting a handle on the full range of non-bacterial species the planet hosts is important for a number of reasons, researchers say. A full listing of what lives where would provide important information for maintaining the health of ecosystems on which humans rely for food, clean water, and other so-called ecosystem services. And undiscovered species could represent new sources of compounds for pharmaceuticals or appear as novel structures human engineers could mimic for lighter, stronger materials.

At its broadest, the widespread loss of biodiversity before anyone has a chance to take the full measure of what's out there makes it difficult to fully grasp the ecological consequences of its loss.

Novacek and others say they are a bit surprised at the relatively low number of non-bacterial species the team estimates as living on the planet ? about half the 10 million that others estimate as realistic. And the trio's estimate for a global extinction rate ? less than 1 percent per decade ? is far below the worst-case of 5 percent per decade some have estimated.

Still, Costello and colleagues acknowledge that if extinction rates are on the high side, say 5 percent per decade, half the five million non-bacterial species he and his colleagues estimate as currently inhabiting Earth will have vanished within 150 years.

Prayer for Peace ~ HH Dalai Lama

~ Words of Truth ~

A Prayer Composed by:
His Holiness Tenzin Gyatso The Fourteenth Dalai Lama of Tibet

Honoring and Invoking the Great Compassion
of the Three Jewels; the Buddha, the Teachings,
and the Spiritual Community

O Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and disciples
of the past, present, and future:
Having remarkable qualities
Immeasurably vast as the ocean,
Who regard all helpless sentient beings
as your only child;
Please consider the truth of my anguished pleas.

Buddha's full teachings dispel the pain of worldly
existence and self-oriented peace;
May they flourish, spreading prosperity and happiness through-
out this spacious world.
O holders of the Dharma: scholars
and realized practitioners;
May your ten fold virtuous practice prevail.

Humble sentient beings, tormented
by sufferings without cease,
Completely suppressed by seemingly endless
and terribly intense, negative deeds,
May all their fears from unbearable war, famine,
and disease be pacified,
To freely breathe an ocean of happiness and well-being.
And particularly the pious people
of the Land of Snows who, through various means,
Are mercilessly destroyed by barbaric hordes
on the side of darkness,
Kindly let the power of your compassion arise,
To quickly stem the flow of blood and tears.

Those unrelentingly cruel ones, objects of compassion,
Maddened by delusion's evils,
wantonly destroy themselves and others;
May they achieve the eye of wisdom,
knowing what must be done and undone,
And abide in the glory of friendship and love.

May this heartfelt wish of total freedom for all Tibet,
Which has been awaited for a long time,
be spontaneously fulfilled;
Please grant soon the good fortune to enjoy
The happy celebration of spiritual with temporal rule.

O protector Chenrezig, compassionately care for
Those who have undergone myriad hardships,
Completely sacrificing their most cherished lives,
bodies, and wealth,
For the sake of the teachings, practitioners,
people, and nation.

Thus, the protector Chenrezig made vast prayers
Before the Buddhas and Bodhisativas
To fully embrace the Land of Snows;
May the good results of these prayers now quickly appear.
By the profound interdependence of emptiness
and relative forms,
Together with the force of great compassion
in the Three Jewels and their Words of Truth,
And through the power
of the infallible law of actions and their fruits,
May this truthful prayer be unhindered
and quickly fulfilled.

This prayer, Words of Truth, was composed by His Holiness Tenzin Gyatso, the
Fourteenth Dalai Lama of Tibet, on 29 September 1960 at his temporary headquarters
in the Swarg Ashram at Dharamsala, Kangra District, Himachal State, India.
This prayer for restoring peace, the Buddhist teachings, and the culture and
self-determination of the Tibetan people in their homeland was written after repeated
requests by Tibetan government officials along with the unanimous consensus of the
monastic and lay communities.

The Eternity of God's Manifest Presence

Whether God is allocated to a
certain phase of existence
is more a matter of conviction than realization.

For the self realized soul,
God manifests Himself
throughout every past, present and future moment.

Given that even time is God,
the same God that was venerated
by the ancients is now being
venerated by every newly born soul.

Not having to re-live the past encounters
that your soul has had with God,
God will give of Himself anew
with each turning tide of cyclical existence.

Manifesting certain features or aspects
of Himself with each chance encounter,
our God is always a living God.

Never being a dead thing of the past,
light my fire, o Lord of lords,
so that I can see Your
crescent shaped face
freshly shine before me.

As present and contemporary
as any newly made phenomenal object,
everyone venerates the Lord
even if unaware of doing so.

Unable to separate the Creator
from the created, all peoples
throughout time were able to enjoy
the sublime experience
of transcendental unification with the Almighty.

Fighting over which God is the right God,
many willingly give themselves headaches
and boil over with sectarian pride.

Claiming that they own God
to the exclusion of everyone else,
the miracle of God's contemporary nature
slips by their minds as they swim
in pools of personal importance.

Spurred on by tradition and the
extended human tribe,
why give your life to something
or someone you don't even know.

Tired of an unrelentingly judgmental God,
who is at fault if there is only Him.

Speaking to me in the form
of skyscrapers and technological innovations,
the genius of God is barely shifted through.

A modern God for a modern human tribe
is the same as an ancient God
for an ancient human tribe.

Seeing the past in the present
and the present in the past,
the God of antiquity is here for you now.

A poet and a mystic,
You, o Mahesha,
are all things.

Astronomer, healer and architect,
design my life after Yours.

Yogi, mendicant and householder,
You, o Mahadeva,
are the chaos of space
and the conformity of home.

Muse, wife and lover,
sing me a song I will never forget
in all of my cosmic wanderings.

Archetype of archetypes
and dancer of dancers,
You, o Shiva,
are the nectar that fills
the heavens with uninterrupted joy.

Ascetic and devil's advocate,
You sit on the tiger skin
of eternal duality and eternal unity.

Rattling Your small drum
with the intensity of a madman,
nothing can stop You
once You start circling around
Your oppositionally internalized forces.

Resting in the cremation grounds
or in Mt. Kailash,
Your consort, Parvati,
watches You in a hypnotic trance
as You engage in Your duties of universal salvation.

Sounding forth the drum beats
of total devastation,
om namah shivaya
till the cock crows again.

At the top of creation,
how can You also be silently
reposing on the top of my altar.

Master of all contradictions,
You, o Rudra,
are the trident of the three
modes of material nature;
alongside the trinity
of consciousness, existence and bliss.

Eternally present in Your fire of transformation,
transform each moment of my foolishness
into the supreme enlightenment of a Shaivite adept.

Clairalience or "Clear Smelling" is the alleged phenomenon where sensitive people can smell the odor of the person who is not on the earth plane.

Clairalience or "Clear Smelling" is the alleged phenomenon where sensitive people can smell the odor of the person who is not on the earth plane. They can sometimes smell their pipe tobacco, cigarette tobacco, food smells, different spices as though they are coming from a kitchen. Some Mediums profess to smell the places where the deceased person worked like a chemical factory, the docks, the places to be reminded of for the recipient of a message off the platform in the church or meeting place or in a development Circle.

What is clairolfaction or paranormal smelling?
Other names: clairolfactory, clair smelling, psychic smelling
A person with the ability of clairolfaction doesn't smell the normal smells that are present in general, but smells energies. These energies are transformed into smell in the nose. The person does smell something that most other people do not smell at the same place. The origin of the energy that is smelt isn't always known. The body or a part of the body (also each organ or tumour) is emitting energy (in the aura/energyfield of the person), what can be received by a person with the ability of clairolfaction. Not only the body or parts of the body are emitting energy, but everything does do that.
Someone who is clairolfaction, smells often only a part or some of the possibilities below. Besides the ways of clairolfaction mentioned below, there are also other possibilities.

What possibilities do exist?
? Smelling diseases
? Smelling shortages
? Smelling the smell of a dead person
? Smelling a smell of someone who is going to die
? Smelling that something isn't good/healthy for you
? Smelling things you see
? Other?

? Smelling diseases
When a person with clairolfaction ability, smells a disease by a person or animal, the person smells the (negative) energy that is emanated by the sick organ. Because every disease emanates a different energy, the kind of disease can be recognized. When you smell a disease for the first time it would be difficult to determine what it is.
It is well-known that dogs can trace cancer by humans. These dogs are clairolfaction.

? Smelling shortages
Every person needs his own basic quantity of food, if the body or mind don't want getting trouble. The quantity and composition of the basic quantity differs from person to person. Each person needs other products. Nobody is the same. The body will function worse with shortages and with to much of certain food. the energy that is needed of a certain product (for example a specific vegetable or fruit) will be present in the aura of a person. The paranormal person can possible smell this emanation in the aura, and the nose of that person will transform the energy of the shortage in a certain smell of a certain product. What rests is a right interpretation what is meant with the smell.
It also occurs that if someone is smelling a product, it means that someone has to much energy of that product in his body and must not eat to much of it.

? Smelling the smell of a dead person
Every person has a certain smell with himself. People love also some particular smell. When spirits are present in a room, they can make themselves known by a smell. This smell can be connected to a person that past away that loved or had that smell. This smell can't be detected by 'normal' noses.

? Smelling a smell of someone who is going to die
Some people with the ability of clairolfaction can sense the 'smell of death'. In the days/weeks/months before a person is dying, the energetic body of the person is coming apart from the physical body. With this process some energy comes free, which can be received in the nose which translates it in a unique smell. Other people do not sense this smell. The person who is going to die, appears to have this smell with him.

? Smelling that something isn't good/healthy for you
Another possible ability of clairolfaction is smelling of something is healthy to eat or not. For example p?t?, this has a very specific smell. When the p?t? smells different by clairolfaction, it is known the p?t? isn't healthy to eat anymore. Another person, who doesn't have clairolfaction, just smells and doesn't find anything strange or wrong about it. The person with clairolfaction ability gets the smell of the product in the nose. With this smell the person also gets the energy of the product in the nose. In this way the person smells the energy of the product.

? Smelling things you see
Another possible characteristic that a person with the ability of clairolfaction can have is that he smells the smell of something he sees. For example when he watches television and sees the pictures of a stable, he smells the horses. Pictures of seawater and he smells the sea. Or if a person is seen, the smell of the person is smelled in the noise. And so on.

SHARING OUR SELF-IMPROVEMENT TECHNIQUES: AN EXCELLENT NEW YEAR RESOLUTION

SHARING OUR SELF-IMPROVEMENT TECHNIQUES: AN EXCELLENT NEW YEAR RESOLUTION
Jan/23/?13

When we?ve been lucky enough to have access to reliable sources regarding self-development instructions our goal is already half way accomplished. Why do I consider this a fact? Because by initiating this personal growing project, we unconsciously start a chain reaction. It is by getting deeply committed to this action that is logical to see very palpable results, in obtaining many positive relationships with first, our true self, then with the eternal Nature?s laws and finally with our fellow men. And really feeling this harmonious relationship we will surely feel God manifesting through our thoughts, words and actions. Our lives will be 100% worth living without any doubt.
Seeking a self-improvement we will find ourselves manifesting important self-control, the necessary self-discipline, our will power self-determined to reach our objectives, our self-esteem greatly increased, and last but not least the advantage of possessing a good quantity of self-assertiveness.

As you have just appreciated our journey through life is quite a beautiful experience! We must imitate a sea captain journal to keep track not only of our advancements but, because of our trials and errors. This action means having both feet on solid ground due to that we human beings like to sometimes minimize our achievements, and other times we love to maximize our efforts.

After over fifty years of keeping track of my own experiences I discovered that the moon phases have a lot to do with both our successes and our failures. I strongly suggest finding out on which moon day you were born. By doing this you will know the astrological zodiac sign on which you were born. Studying a lot of people through the years these experiences have confirmed what I explained above. There will be a minimum of wasted efforts and much less frustration. Becoming a book worm at ten years old and now being sixty-six I?m fully aware that I still have a lot to learn. Deep down I?m sure that there won?t be a tiny bit of wasted effort. All these readings, have had the main purpose of to make very contagious the practical application of knowledge, both human and Divine.
As I always do. I wish very intensely that all the cosmic love from my brave and loving heart flow to your also brave, bold and loving hearts. Best regards AMORIFER-ALDEN

Thoughts To Ponder - #43

Thoughts To Ponder - #43

?What a man can be, he must be. This need we call self-actualization.? -Abraham Maslow Inside every living thing is an inner drive, a Divine impulse, to completely and wondrously self-express. That is, to be what it is, totally. What is it you have aspired to be or do? Make this the Time of Your Beginning, and the Moment of Your Manifestation. Don't wait another minute!

?The story of the human race is the story of men and women selling themselves short.? -Abraham Maslow

?When people appear to be something other than good and decent, it is only because they are reacting to stress, pain, or the deprivation of basic human needs such as security, love, and self-esteem.? ?Abraham Maslow

?Self-actualizing people have a deep feeling of identification, sympathy, and affection for human beings in general. They feel kinship and connection, as if all people were members of a single family.? ?Abraham Maslow

?The great lesson from the true mystics, from the Zen monks, and now also from the Humanistic and Transpersonal psychologists, is that the sacred is in the ordinary, that it is to be found in one's daily life...in one's own
backyard.? -Abraham Maslow

?Whereas the average individuals "often have not the slightest idea of what they are, of what they want, of what their own opinions are," self-actualizing individuals have "superior awareness of their own impulses, desires, opinions, and subjective reactions in general.? -Abraham Maslow

?There are no perfect human beings! Persons can be found who are good, very good indeed, in fact, great. There do in fact exist creators, seers, sages, saints, shakers, and movers...even if they are uncommon and do not come by the dozen. And yet these very same people can at times be boring, irritating, petulant, selfish, angry, or depressed. To avoid disillusionment with human nature, we must first give up our illusions about it.? -Abraham Maslow ###

Wednesday 1/23/13

We?ve reached the end of hump day and the middle of the week is leaning more towards the weekend. There were things that had to get done today that made the message so late, but that is quite ok. We?ve been getting hit with some major messages that take some time to sink in. Just a quick reminder, if you ever feel that you are falling behind, don?t worry. Please take your time reading what you need to read, when you need to read it. There is no push from anyone to stay current if you don?t have the capability. Everything is read in the time that it is needed by everyone when they are ready or capable. With that said, let?s hear from the Tree Magick cards.

The Holly Tree ? ?A great awakening through enlightenment. Evil is warded off by your devotion to good. Like the evergreen Holly tree, or ?holy tree,? you have divine talents at the root and heart of your being. Your whole world can grow ?evergreen? from it. Like the berries or the smooth or prickly leaves on a male or female tree, your life will take shape around its essential nature. The thorny leaves and red berries represent suffering. When the fruits are discovered by patience, what is possibly a test now will prove a credit to you. This is a fresh start, a second chance, or time of renewal and permanence, promising a fortified heart and a happier life. Parties and reunions lie ahead, just as the Holly tree enjoys Winter while anticipating the Spring.?

As we are all still coming down off our ?holiday highs? we are noticing that we are in the doldrums of winter. These can leave us feeling weak and open to attack. Or we can feel that we are under attack because we are not really having anything to look forward to. One of the lesser of the messages that are coming through from this card are to remember to have fun and try to find a reason to celebrate. If you don?t have one, make it up. Throw a ?just because? party. For many of you, this isn?t quite true as you get ready for the biggest football game of the year. But what then? What if you have nothing to look forward to? This is when you can get creative and use your imagination to have your own celebration.

Another message that is coming through strongly from the Holly tree is a continuation from a conversation about ?evil? that we?ve been having. There is a reminder that nothing evil can come your way or really affect you unless you allow it. Every time one of these comments is made, there is a flood of recourse that comes through from the skeptics. Maybe they are in my head, but they always speak against the message as a reminder that things do happen that are out of our control. What we can keep in mind is how we allow the events, situations, and people affect us. They may be completely evil, but that doesn?t mean that we have to give in to what they are attempting to cause in us. They want us to shut out our own lights because they are living in the dark.

You?ve worked too hard to allow yourself to fall back into the pit that you?ve been crawling out of. Why would you let the words, actions, or deeds of another drag you back to where you?ve escaped from? We all have thorny shells around our fruits because we?ve been through the pain and the healing is at the center. The progress we?ve made at allowing our fruits to move beyond the thorns is so evident to everyone around us. We may not realize it, or even see it, but it is there. And all we have to do is keep the light burning, open our hearts and our eyes and see what is going on around us. How we are affecting people by continuing to shed our heart light upon them is more than amazing. Whether you are new to reading the posts, or you?ve been readingthem since day one, you are in the process of awakening to a new awareness. You have seen what a difference all of the messages can make in your life when they are applied. You are led to other things in your life where you gain new knowledge to further your progress. These are not the end all beat all, but the lessons in them are invitations for you to figure out what has been occurring inside.

These posts are not the reason you are awakening. They are merely guidelines to help you along the way. They are for the reader and the teacher. There are going to be thorns ? posts that leave you suffering because of the doors they?ve opened. There are going to be fruits ? posts that answer a question that you?ve been trying to find the answer to. You will be looking at things in ways you haven?t been before.

Why are we looking at the possible benefits, reasons, and effects from these posts? It is certainly NOT to give the reader a pat on the back. Nor is it to boost ego or brag. It is simply to give you the spirit intended purpose for them. It is the thorny fruit that has been placed here time and again. Will you be able to walk away from reading this post believing this or will you think differently about your reader? This is something that the Holly tree is trying to get across to you. Evil is not always what you think it is and sometimes the good things in life can appear to be evil when if you?ve been paying attention, they aren?t. Interesting how that is being displayed here tonight, but that?s really what is going on.

Now what about this thing called patience? What is it? Why do we have to practice it? Why should we not just have it to begin with? How do we learn it? How can we be patient when the world around us wants things done yesterday? An apple will not grow in the time we want it too. A tree will not be large enough to produce the wood it gifts us to shelter ourselves when we feel it ought to. A flower will not bloom without the perfect conditions around it. Everything takes time. That wonderful illusion we have to call reality in order to know where we have to be and when. Time is all we have! Past, present, and future collide every moment. As soon as you move to the next word you are in the future. While you are reading a word you are in the present. And once you finish reading it, it is in the past. It is difficult to explain, but there truly is no past, present, or future. They are all happening NOW.

So what are you going to do with your NOW? You can let your heart light shine. The love that is there can emanate to every being around you. The people who you call evil need your love and light more than the people who?ve shown you love. There is already that connection between you. Create a bond of love (whether expressed or merely extended through thought) with those who?ve done you wrong or might do you wrong in the future. They truly need it! Thank you to the person who posted that inspiring thought on Facebook today.

You can also release your fears of things not happening because it is taking too long to see the fruits appearing. A plumeria tree takes years before it is ready to bloom. It takes a foal several years before it is strong enough for us to ride after it is born. We can?t plant a seed and expect fruit the following week. Things just don?t happen in OUR time. They happen in the universal time.

Celebrate life! Don?t get too mental over what isn?t happening! There?s a reason you have to wait. There?s a reason you don?t know what you think you need to know just yet. There are other things you have to experience first. We could really dig deeper into this, but the point has been made. If there?s any confusion, please ask. Never be afraid to ask someone something. It may seem silly to them because you ask, but that?s okay. You are the one who needs to know and they are being given an opportunity to practice patience and compassion. Who cares if you are being judged for your question or curiosity? That isn?t going to affect YOUR outcome. You want the information you are seeking. That is the important thing to remember. Isn?t it nice to know that you have a connection here where you CAN ask without any judgment? We?re just a garden full of Holly Trees trying like crazy to produce fruit and share it.

Je Vous Aime Tous!

Family Dynamics ? The Webs We Weave

Family Dynamics ? The Webs We Weave

The core of everyone?s life issues stem from the family for generations as issues and characteristics were passed on. These family dynamics are common to the degree many people believe it is just the way life is. Very few families are idyllic.

Never mind, ?Father Knows Best,? and ?Leave It To Beaver,? where everything was solved in 30 minutes with two commercials. More families resemble, ?The Twilight Zone.?

Despite these, sometimes, unwieldy family dynamics, many people manage to lead happy, productive lives, with only a few uncomfortable dynamics.

When you recognize your childhood baggage you carried into adulthood, you can take steps to eliminate negative influencers, correct and change how you raise your children. There are healthy family dynamic qualities you can create in your adult life if that quality was absent or in short supply when you were growing up.

? Love and Affection: Family is the first place and time that a child experiences family dynamics. If you did not receive unconditional love as a child, you will likely have difficulty trusting that other?s will love you and you will likely have difficulty valuing your Self. There is no substitute for loving your Self. It is the number one cause of unhappiness in adult relationships. The first step to heal the lack of unconditional love is recognizing the damage and that you deserved to have unconditional love then and still do. Your sense of unworthiness are not based on reality. Your sense of unworthiness is the product of a deficit, no doubt, handed down through many generations. Listen to what you tell your Self. If you say things such as: ?I?m stupid,? I am not good enough for___, ?I always mess up.? You need to stop the negative labels, blaming or criticizing. You need to champion your Self with positive feedback. Thoughts create feelings = actions = out come i.e. results.

? Family Respects Autonomy: Were you encouraged to develop your own personal identity separate from the family while maintaining a role within it. The family supports and cheers on each person in his/her personal quests. Children, who are not allowed the freedom to express and develop their identity tend to become adults, who develop co-dependent relationships?whereby they put the needs of others before their own and/or are dependent on the control of others. Addressing autonomy issues include learning how to comfortably spend time alone, pursuing interests (whether or not those interests are valued by friends or family). Activities such as: classes, joining clubs, sports activities, boosting self-esteem through workshops, meditation, etc.

? Structure and Boundaries: Parents are the value setters and rule keepers. They provide the structure for the family to feel safe (protected), cared for and respected?-I love you enough to set boundaries for you to learn and grow?to discover who you truly are. To a child lack of boundaries or values translates to being uncared for and/or unvalued. People, who grow up with little or no structure often fail to offer structure to their children or overreact and are too rigid on issues that are minor in nature. Providing structure and consistency by establishing routines that everyone in the family respects and follows, with occasional exceptions, gives the child a sense of being valued and cared for. These routines include, but are not limited to; making their bed by age four?perfection is not required; daily chores, a set breakfast, lunch and dinner time, with everyone at the table with occasional exceptions. Routine ?together time? such as: playing board games, cards, reading, talking about dreams, feelings and future plans is critical for children to feel connected to each family member.

Consistency, persistency, boundaries and structure are the keys to develop healthy relationship dynamics. It is never too late or too early to create a happy, stress free life with peace of mind. You deserve it. Those you love deserve it. BE the leader of your family dynamics. ###
